The 2008 CA Basketball Tournament

By Persel G. Esman

Designed to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among court employees through basketball, the 2008 CA Basketball Tournament formally opened on June 16, 2008 with a parade of the participating teams namely: Orange, Gray, White, Green, Black, Blue, Yellow and Red Teams, with the Supreme Court Team as a guest team headed by Court Administrator Jose P. Perez and Assistant Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez. The opening ceremony was graced by Supreme Court Associate Justice Dante O. Tinga who gave an inspirational message and by CA Justices led by Presiding Justice Conrado M. Vasquez, Jr. who gave the welcome remarks. Other highlights of the event were the CA Justices Shooting Contest where our beloved magistrates gamely tried their luck in the three-point corner and the presentation of the award for the Most Beautiful Muse where nine beautiful ladies from the Court vied for the title.

After the two-month-long tournament and after earning an over-all standing of 8 wins-0 losses, the CA Basketball Red Team savored its sweet victory when no less than the PJ awarded it the trophy and medals for being the champion team in the awarding ceremonies held on August 19, 2008. The Green and White teams were awarded the 1st and 2nd runners-up trophies, respectively. ACA Jose Midas P. Marquez likewise received a plaque of appreciation on behalf of the SC Guest Team.

Following a successful tournament, basketball players and enthusiasts in the court have officially formed the CA Basketball Club which aims to make sportsmanship, team spirit and competitive attitude a means of improving employees’ performance, morale and attitude. This is short of saying that basketball tournaments are now something to look forward to in the Court of Appeals.
