It Can't Be Just the Rollos Alone

By J. Bienvenido L. Reyes

Last December 22, 2007, the pillars of the judiciary scrutinized the break of greens in a tournament organized by the Judiciary Golf Club at the Valley Golf and Country Club in Antipolo City in honor of Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno. The tournament officially started at 7:30 a.m. with 25 player-participants from the judiciary and 9 guest-participants.

The ceremonial tee-off was graced by no less than SC Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, with SC Justice Presbitero J. Velasco, Jr., Sandiganbayan Justice Raoul V. Victorino (Ret.), CA Justice Bojie L. Reyes, who are the Chairman Emeritus, Chairman, and President, respectively, of the Judiciary Golf Club. The ceremonial tee shot of Chief Justice Puno was straight and long that sent the caddies scampering to run after the elusive golf ball that carries a reward of P500.00.

By themselves, each player has elevated golf to new heights, engaging in a fierce yet congenial competition, indulging in the game to unwind but pitched camaraderie and friendship, too.

After the half-day skirmishes, the Judiciary Golf Club isn’t done yet. Sumptuous lunch was served to the participants at the club’s function room. There, Chief Justice Puno gave an inspirational talk. In gist, Chief Justice Puno emphasized that the primordial essence of the tournament is not winning, but fostering inter-personal relationships among the members of the judiciary, and uplifting their physical and mental fitness.

RTC Judge Omar Viola who emceed the program announced the winners of the tournament. Guest participant Atty. Emil Loyola emerged as the overall champion with a net score of 65.

The following participants ruled the game: CLASS A: SC Justice Presbitero J. Velasco, Jr., Champion; Retired RTC Judge Silvestre Bello, Jr., First Runner-Up; Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, Second Runner-Up. CLASS B: RTC Judge Oscar Barrientos, Champion; MTC Judge Domingo Maristela, Jr., First Runner-Up; Retired RTC Judge Nemesio Felix, Second Runner-Up. CLASS C: SC Justice Ruben T. Reyes, Champion; RTC Judge Ed Tanguangco, First Runner-Up; CA Justice Ricardo Rosario, Second Runner-Up. LADIES’ DIVISION: CA Justice Telly Bernabe, Champion. GUESTS’ DIVISION I: Atty. Roma Valdez, Champion; Danny Gonzales, Runner-Up. GUESTS’ DIVISION II: Homer Ortiz, Champion; Peng dela Rama, Runner-Up.

After the winners received their trophies, cash and gift items consisting of 21-inch Flatron LG TV, a griller, a National Refrigerator, among others, were raffled to all the participants. Judge Viola of the Regional Trial Court, Angeles City regaled the participants with pasalubong treats from Pampanga.

Indeed, there is nothing like taking a breath away from perennial caseloads, for even justices and judges of the court will appreciate the challenges offered by the fairways. With the warm reception from the participants, the Judiciary Golf Club knew it had started a tradition of sorts.
