Justice Renato C. Dacudao Bids Farewell June 19

Born on June 19, 1937 in Iloilo City, Justice Renato C. Dacudao was a consistent scholar and top honors student from grade school to graduate studies. He finished his primary schooling as valedictorian at the Dingle (Iloilo) Central School; was salutatorian (and equal first in scholarship), Iloilo City High School, and editor-in-chief of “The Queen City Forum,” the official student publication; finished with honors, A.A., at U.P. Iloilo College, and was editor-in-chief of “The UPIC Monthly,” the official student publication; was university chess champion and graduated LL.B summa cum laude at Central Philippine University, Iloilo City; and finished LL.M., with highest honors, MLQU School of Graduate Studies, and was recipient of the President Leoncio Monzon gold medal for academic excellence.

He has spent his professional life in government service, garnering nearly all the outstanding awards as a government worker. He was named “Outstanding State Prosecutor” of the Ministry of Justice in 1978. Two years into his appointment as RTC Judge in Cebu City, he was the Presidential Awardee for the Best Written Decision among RTC Judges all over the country during the Supreme Court 88th Anniversary Celebration, June 9, 1989. He won the award for the Best Decision in Criminal Law from the Chief Justice Fred Ruiz-Castro Memorabilla Commission in 1995, and the Chief Justice Cayetano Arellano Award as “Outstanding RTC Judge” from the Foundation for Judicial Excellence in 1996.

He holds the distinction of being the first graduate of a local law school in the Western Visayas to reach the Court of Appeals. He is married to Lilia F. Latiza, a CPA and former PNB employee, with whom he has a son, Dr. Jose R.L. Dacudao, a licensed optometrist.
